My father Sam Arthur opened Arthur's Jewelry in Reidsville in November 1979. He had been in the jewelry business in Reidsville since 1957. He worked for Jewel Box, a regional chain of jewelry stores in the southeast, popular with the people of Reidsville. He worked his way from being a young, eager salesman to assistant manager to manager and then to being the supervisor of seven stores. After 32 years, he decided to venture out on his own. Sam opened a store next to K Mart in the Southwood Village Shopping Center on Way Street in Reidsville. He was well-established in the jewelry industry and both well known and respected. He was always quick with a joke and never forgot any of his customers. He shared in the precious memories of three generations of customers and friends. In the fall of 1988, he hired me to learn the business. He trained me for eleven wonderful years, trying to pass along his experience to me until he passed away in November 1999, leaving the business to my brother, sister, and I. We have missed him greatly.
